Do Black Americans Have a Language? Music Gatekeepers & Franck Zanu
Do Black Americans have a language — or are we being told we don’t because of how culture gets filtered and sold? This video responds directly to Franck Zanu’s claim that Black Americans don’t have a language and lack cultural gatekeepers because of the music that gets pushed to the public. That argument misunderstands what language and culture actually are — and who controls what the world gets to see. English didn’t simply replace something for Black Americans. It was reshaped. Cadence, rhythm, tone, signifying, metaphor, call-and-response, humor, and storytelling transformed English into a distinctly Black American language that has influenced global speech, media, and culture. Language is not just vocabulary — it’s usage, meaning, and social code. The same applies to music. The music that reaches the mainstream is not the totality of Black American culture — it’s what survives industry gatekeeping, corporate filtering, and commercial incentives. From spirituals and blues to jazz, R&B, funk, soul, and hip hop, Black American music has always carried layered meaning, identity, and history — even when distorted or selectively promoted. This conversation challenges the idea that visibility equals authorship, and that what’s marketed defines who we are. Culture isn’t erased because it’s filtered. If anything, filtering proves how powerful it is.
