Foundational Black Americans (FBA) are officially canceling the term “African American” — and why that label has never served the interests of Black Americans who are the true native-born citizens that built the United States. For decades, the term “African American” has been used to erase our unique lineage, tie us to foreign immigrants, and undermine the historical contributions of FBA descendants of American slavery. It’s time to reclaim our identity and stop allowing a vague, pan-African label to dilute our fight for reparations, recognition, and respect.
