Essence CEO Resigns....SO BLACK AMERICANS DO THIS!

In this video, I'm breaking down the recent news about Caroline Wanga stepping down as the CEO and President of Essence Festival. I get into the community's reaction to her resignation, which she attributed to health reasons. I'll take you back to the initial excitement when Wanga, a Kenyan American, took the lead at Essence. We saw a push to "Africanize" the festival, which, as I discuss, caused a stir and led to some important conversations about the focus of this iconic Black American brand. This all came to a head with the "Jollof vs. Jambalaya" debate, a symbol of the cultural conversations we were having. I'm also tackling the controversy around Essence Festival's partnership with Target, especially after Target pulled back on its DEI program. Many of us felt Essence should have stood with the community in boycotting Target, and I explore why that was such a complex issue, especially given Wanga's history with the company. Finally, I'm looking at what her resignation means for the future of Essence. Is this a chance for the festival to get back to its roots? Or did the criticism just get to be too much? Let's get into it. #CarolineWanga #EssenceFestival #BlackCulture #AfricanDiaspora #TargetBoycott #DEI #CulturalIdentity #BlackAmericanHeritage #JollofVsJambalaya #OshayDukeJackson ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
